    It began like any other young girl's dream...

    Former model Carre Otis was a top model for many years and worked with top designers and magazines for nearly 10 years. Her beauty was undeniable, but at what cost? In this month's Australian Vogue, Carre opens up about maintaining her figure by vomiting, using pills and starving herself, while magazine's used photo shop to cover up her unhealthy hair and skin due to dehydration and lack of sleep.

    After her recovery, this beauty came back on the scene as a plus size model and successfully worked for many designers including Marina Rinaldi, as well as the former MODE Magazine.

    Carre's story has Ms. Jones asking the question, "Have the pressures of the modeling world changed since the introduction of plus models to the industry? Unfortunately, no."

    "In my position, models open up to me about their experiences all the time," shares Jones. "The sad truth is that there are a lot of similarities between what Carre Otis experienced and what some plus models are still going through today in our industry. Plus models, as small as 14, are being asked to lose weight, as they are being told that clients do not want to use models larger than a 'small' 14 or 16."

    "And it doesn't stop there," comments Ms. Jones. "Plus models are now working out excessively, starving themselves and taking B-12 shots, hoping to lose weight and inches. Some are being asked to go under the knife to fix natural lines and wrinkles on the face, and we have seen many plump up their lips and Botox their faces, so much that they have been sent home by their clients. Smoking, drugs, both over the counter and illegal, are all being used by some plus model as a result of the pressure to be smaller in the plus-size industry."

    Jones continues, "The frustrating part about the plus size industry is that while we preach diversity, the size of the models representing us is going down. It is not uncommon practice for size 6 and 8 models to represent plus size fashion companies, while their plus size customer continues to ask for realistic images and models they can identify with."

    Jones is fed up with, "The lack of respect for plus women, and it's time to do something about it. We have a voice, and united we can make a big impact in several small ways:

    Support our plus-size models. Encourage them in social media; let them know that you see their work and appreciate their representing women with curves.

    Hit social media and publically thank brands and designers who do use plus size models in diverse sizes that are a true representation of their fashions.

    And for those companies 'not' getting it, impress upon them, with your spending dollars and voices, to market with 'visibly' plus-size models. If they want your plus-size dollars they should be representing you. Write letters, emails and post on their Facebook page and Twitter accounts; this will get their attention, and quickly."

    "I'm already having a banner first day!" exclaimed Sarah Belcher, family and consumer sciences teacher. "Students are up early today. I have assignments completed, read receipts for the welcome email I sent, and a phone conversation about how to get started!"

    "I was pretty enthused about the first day already, but the student response has made me even more optimistic about this semester," she added.

    Tabitha Stitt, also a family and consumer science educator, said everything is in place.

    "After a short walk to the bakery this morning, I'm ready to start the new school year with my blueberry muffin and green tea in hand," she said.

    "Everyone seemed to be extremely busy getting everything in line for the school year to start off right," she added.

    Many new developments are almost at hand. Stitt has both eyes facing forward.

    "There have been many changes this year, including implementation of Common Core and SLOs, a focus on student data, and more flexible hours, which will all create a positive impact on students, teachers, and ECOT as a whole," she said.

    Heather Townley said being a mentor creates a unique perspective at the dawn of the school year.

    "We get to watch our students (which are the teachers) 'step off the bus,' and begin positively impacting the lives of their students," she said. "You know, that is the best part of teaching at ECOT...getting to be that impact for the students."

    "The crazy part is you feel that every day, every year, and the impact you leave just grows with every new roster," she added. "I hope that, as mentors, we are leaving that small positive impact with the teachers we get to work with and help too!"

    Gerald Cox, who teaches Healthy Living DEC, said he views the beginning of a new school like a holiday - brimming with anticipation.

    "We are all excited about the new people we meet and the relationships we will develop," he said. "The positive anxiety we feel about new classes, students and teachers is a unique and wonderful feeling. "

    "We plan to build on new school year momentum to lead our students to a positive and successful school year, as they continue to work towards graduation," he added.

    CAPITOL HIL. FRIDAY, (PRBuzz.com) August 23, 2013 -- "If Irish-Americans think they can forget about Northern Ireland and its bad old days of anti-Catholic discrimination, they better think again."
    That is how Fr. Sean Mc Manus -- President of the Capitol Hill-based Irish National Caucus - reacted to a damning Report on the way Catholics are still being discriminated against in housing.
    The Report, "Equality Can't Wait" by the United Nations-recognized " Participation And The Practice of Rights (PPR)," has found " chronic" housing shortages, that "a series of ministerial, statutory and council failures have compounded religious inequality in housing across North Belfast" and that "these failures have adversely impacted on the Catholic community".
    The Report also found:
    • A £133 million North Belfast Housing Strategy to tackle inequality failed
    • "Engineering" of a Belfast city center 'shared space' is being prioritized over tackling Catholic housing need, and
    • Protections which ring-fenced new social homes for areas impacted by religious inequality have been removed.

    The Report charges that the way the religious background of people in housing need is measured has been deceptively altered to reduce the number of Catholics facing "housing stress".
    PPR policy and research support officer Kate Ward added their findings show that "Catholics in North Belfast in need of housing have been repeatedly disadvantaged".

    Fr. Mc Manus conclude: " Blatant anti-Catholic housing discrimination was one of the injustices that propelled the launching of the Civil Rights Movement in Northern Ireland in 1968. The PPR was founded by the late Inez Mc Cormack, one of the four Mac Bride Principles signatories. How sadly ironic is that? The work of the Irish National Caucus is, therefore, now more important than ever."

    Video Music Awards is the first to use revolutionary combination of Ikegami HD camera, ARRI Super 35mm sensor, and FUJINON Cabrio zooms for live, multi-camera HDTV broadcast

    Wayne, N.J. (PRBuzz.com) August 23, 2013 -- FUJIFILM North America Corporation, Optical Devices Division has announced that the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards will be the first live, multicamera HDTV broadcast to use Ikegami HDK-97ARRI large-format CMOS cameras paired with digital cinema style FUJINON PL19-90 Cabrio Premier PL Mount zoom lenses. On August 25th, 2013, MTV will air the VMAs live from Barclays Center, a new state-of-the-art entertainment arena in Brooklyn, NY at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT on MTV.

    "By enabling a multicamera broadcast workflow with a visually stunning film look, this perfect synergy between the Ikegami/ARRI Super 35mm CMOS sensor camera and the compact Cabrio lens offers HDTV broadcasts the look we've long sought," said Danny Walters, project engineer for Viacom Media Networks, Music Group and Logo, Technical Operations and Remote division in Nashville, TN.

    New Remote Productions, Inc, a business unit within Viacom, operates a fleet of remote production vehicles for use by Viacom Networks as well as third-party customers. Four production trucks will be parked in and around the Barclays Center for live coverage of the Red Carpet, the VMA All Access live stream, and the primetime event being produced by Viacom's Moonman Productions, to be directed by Hamish Hamilton.

    Prior to the NAB convention this year, MTV placed a large equipment order directly with Ikegami, including eight HDK-97ARRI cameras and eight FUJINON PL 19-90 Cabrio lenses, which arrived in May 2013. Walters explained that, as "big believers in the large-format imager philosophy for TV entertainment," they began searching for the large-format sensor camera first, including models by Sony and Red, and even took a hard look at the ARRI Alexa, But when Walters learned about the partnership between Ikegami and ARRI, the maker of the Super 35mm CMOS sensor, he chose the Ikegami HDK-97ARRI because of its ability to fuse the large-format imager with a traditional broadcast workflow.

    "When it came time to select the lenses, it was an easy choice," Walters said. "We've been very satisfied FUJINON users for a long time, and the fact that they had produced a lens that merges a broadcast- and ENG-friendly workflow with cine-style features and characteristics made it a natural choice for this application."

    First Patients will arrive at the Hingham Residence in mid- September

    HINGHAM AND NORWELL, MA, (PRBuzz.com) August 23, 2013 -- NVNA and Hospice, the only independent nonprofit home healthcare agency serving Boston's South Shore, will begin accepting patients in mid-September at the area's first Hospice Residence in Hingham.

    Located on Turkey Hill adjacent to the Weir River Farm, the hospice residence will provide a much needed home for people under hospice care who can no longer stay in their own home. No such residence exists for South Shore residents; of the nine hospice homes in the state, the closest are in Needham and on Cape Cod.

    The Hospice Residence in Hingham will be available for individuals and families from across the South Shore. The beautiful historic home in Hingham has been transformed into a tranquil and peaceful place where patients facing the end of life may receive hospice care and families may gather to spend precious time with loved ones. The residence and grounds provide space for loved ones to support one another in a home like setting.

    With its fascinating local history it is a wonderful re-use for the beautiful property. Upon its opening, this will be the first of its kind on the South Shore. The residence will include 12 private rooms, each with its own bathroom, and will provide a tranquil and comfortable setting for patients to receive hospice care. The home sits on 3.62 acres on Turkey Hill Lane in Hingham.

    The home, originally an opulent private estate, became a haven for retired Quaker teachers in 1962 and then expanded into an assisted living residence over the years. But the Quaker organization that owned the property found it fiscally challenging to operate the 18-unit assisted-living facility and it went up for sale in 2012.

    The history of the home began when Ezra Thayer, a prominent Boston lawyer and dean of Harvard Law School, and his wife, Ethel, started summering in Hingham in the early 1900s. They bought a farmhouse on East Street - now home to the Trustees of Reservations' Weir River Farm - added acreage, and, between 1910 and 1912, built a large shingled house near the top of Turkey Hill. The house burned down in 1929 and the Thayer family built the current brick home. The third floor of the main house was a studio for Polly Thayer Starr, an accomplished artist. Her art is represented in many museums and universities throughout the country, including the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and the Fogg Museum in Cambridge, MA.

To finance mass production beyond the prototype stage, the company is launching a Kickstarter campaign on Tuesday, August 20th, 2013 at noon, to raise $200,000 with the goal to have a ready product for consumers worldwide in March 2014.

    The natural user interface of the Flowton Controller (Controller) does not require a screen or any graphical feedback, and does not rely on reproducing a visible mouse pointer for navigation. For instance, simple left/right hand swipes may switch TV channels, while up/down may raise or lower the room temperature through a wireless thermostat. This is possible with the Controller's built-in RGB camera to capture the user's gestures. The Controller also has port for depth cameras, such as Xbox® Kinect™, as well as analogs, to grant the user an extended range of gestures to control electronics. The Controller communicates with devices through WiFi, Bluetooth, and a wireless infrared peripheral. Setting up the Controller is as easy as programming a universal remote. The Controller also has an array of microphones for keyword recognition to issue simple commands to even the simplest of home electronics.
