Creative Photo Contest Showcases 12 Proud Lifetime Moments

Independent survey finds reused hard drives purchased online contain personal data and or sensitive

(PRBuzz.com) July 24, 2013 -- The UK's leading data security solution service provider has announced the startling results of its latest independent survey, carried out by the University of South Wales' Computer Forensics Lab. The investigation reveals that most hard drives purchased online contained personal data.

Ultratec specialise in erasing or destroying data from all types of electronic media. In the wake of a £200,000 fine levied against NHS Surrey by data regulators for the loss of more than 3000 patients' sensitive information, it commissioned Professor Andrew Blythe and his team at the Computer Forensics Lab, University of South Wales to find out if hard drives purchased online contained any data. The point of the study was to assess consumer and seller awareness levels in the wake of a number of high-profile data security scandals involving both public and private organisations.

The study found that although most consumers are more aware of the risks associated with data security, many companies offering products on auction sites are still ignoring the potential consequences and selling hard drives containing personal and/or corporate data.

The Ultratec investigation targeted IT parts resellers and recyclers who use online auction sites to sell their drives or computers. Some drives were purchased as having been wiped or erased and others were purchased as defective.

Each hard drive was examined by Professor Andrew Blyth and his team at the University of South Wales. Ultratec describes the results as shocking with the study demonstrating that even hard drives which have been allegedly 'wiped' still contained personal and sensitive data.

Professor Blythe said, "Ultratec, considered by many to be leaders in the field of Data Destruction, commissioned an independent study in 2012 to find out if hard drives purchased online contained any data. We approached Ultratec as they have demonstrated how to correctly destroy data on millions of disks over a 17 year period. This is something that cannot be taken lightly and we wanted to see if others had the same expertise, commitment and results.

Ultratec's Information Assurance Consultant Bill Osborne, who is on the advisory council of the Asset Disposal and Information Security Alliance (ADISA) is one of a group of leading experts in the area of risk management, compliance and data protection within the area of IT Asset Disposal. He said, "There is no doubt that this investigation has thrown up some very troubling findings. It highlights the very real threat of data security and shows that there is still a long way to go until sensitive data removal is approached correctly by the majority."

The report into the investigation's findings states, "There appear to be a number of disks containing a mixture of corporate and personal data. This suggests that either the user is working on corporate data on a home system, which raises security issues, or the user is carrying out personal activities on corporate systems, which could also raise concerns. For example 6 of the 125 hard drives contained pornographic material but of the 6 hard drives, one could be determined as originating from a corporate environment."

The Ultratec report is part of an international effort to raise awareness about the importance of data security and will be published in full later this year. Its efforts come on the back of an increased international push to reduce data offences and safeguard sensitive information. In the UK, the Information Commissioner is currently seeking custodial sentences for serious data offences and potential fines of up to 2% of global turnover after stating that the current cap on fines of £500,000 is not sufficient and tougher penalties including prison sentences are needed. The custodial sentences, first introduced by the Criminal Justice and Immigration Act 2008, require activation by secondary legislation. This is expected to be debated following the recent Directive on Network and Information Security proposed by the EU.

Fancy Viruses are Making Money

(PRBuzz.com) July 24, 2013 -- Over the past few years, viruses have transformed from nice little programs that would delete everything off of your hard drive to something much more severe. With two recent viruses, BeeBone and DOJ Virus, not only will they rob your files from your computer, they will also hold you and your machine hostage. For most of the users that have become infected, they are running anti-virus and anti-spam software, they are updating their operating system for proper batches, and they are not cruising untrustworthy websites. So, how did they get the virus?

In all of the instances, it was discovered that the machines, and web browsers, allowed new programs to be added and executed without prompting, warning, or stopping when they visited a website. The programs were automatically added as an advertisement popped up on a web site, and because the web browser did not have adequate security, the virus was downloaded. Then, when the virus owner decides to take over the machine, they send a message to the virus to activate.

Upon activation, the viruses bring up various warnings or stop pages that indicate that you are operating on an illegal machine, or that your computer has been involved in an illegal activity. In all instances, the virus turns on your web-cam, and it shows a person on the other side of the internet claiming to be an officer of a company or a law enforcement officer. The person may have proper clothing, accents or other paraphernalia that would lead you to believe you may actually have done something wrong.

Half a Million Dollar drug bust turns into a major exotic animal rescue

(PRBuzz.com) July 24, 2013 -- A half a million dollar drug bust morphed into a major exotic animal protection investigation and rescue, Friday (July 19th, 2013) the sheriffs office found six Timber Wolves at a Pottawatomie Country Oklahoma home.

"We were stunned at the number of wolves, but it is not the first time nor will it be the last we rescue exotic animals from drug dealers" said Joe Schreibvogel a United States Zoological Association rep.

The U.S.Z.A was contacted by the Department of Environmental Quality and sent experts from The Garold Wayne Interactive Zoo to transport and rehome after police officers entered the property to search for drugs.

Investigators from the United States Zoological Association came across 6 timbers wolves in multiple levels of malnutrition and starvation. "In just prior days older wolves started to eat the pups and none of them survived" said another U.S. Zoological Association rep.

The wolves, six in total, all looked to be poorly cared for, with one wolf dead of unknown causes on site.

A specialist from G.W. Zoo examined the animals and determined that all of the creatures "were clearly in distress," Schreibvogel said. "We're continuing our investigation."

The police executed the search warrant on a suspected methamphetamine manufacturer and arrested one man.

Police seized over half a million dollars in drugs and lab materials before coming across the timber wolves.
