Raycom Media Standardizes on JVC GY-HM650 ProHD Mobile News Cameras

Initial Order Replaces Outdated ENG Camcorders, Expands Inventory for Stations

WAYNE, NJ (PRBuzz.com) April 2, 2013 -- JVC Professional Products Company, a division of JVC Americas Corp., today announced Raycom Media has purchased more than 130 GY-HM650 ProHD mobile news cameras. It is the first in a series of purchases that will standardize all ENG operations in the company on the GY-HM650 camera.

"The major differentiator for the GY-HM650 is all of its IP capabilities," explained Dave Folsom, vice president and chief technical officer, Raycom Media. "Between the built-in live streaming and FTP file transfer capabilities, we can't wait to get these cameras in the field."

Raycom, which began with 15 stations in 1996, owns or provides services for 52 stations in 36 markets in 18 states, covering more than 12 percent of U.S. TV households. The new cameras began arriving this month, and are being distributed between the 31 Raycom stations that produce local news. This large adoption follows an earlier Raycom purchase of JVC cameras for studio use.

"We have a lot of aging cameras at many of our stations," Folsom noted. "We intend to buy many more cameras going forward, because we have to replace as well as greatly expand our fleet over the next few years. The GY-HM650 is being used to enhance that older fleet."

Many of the older models are larger, heavier shoulder-mount models that use proprietary recording media. "JVC's new ProHD cameras are much lighter, they have great performance, and have far more features," Folsom said. "We tested the camera in a couple of locations, and our shooters loved the images and the sensitivity. Plus, SD cards are more ubiquitous, easier to use, and cheaper than proprietary systems."

While 100 of the new JVC cameras will be used to directly replace aging ENG models, more than 30 new cameras will be used to increase the number of cameras at select stations. "It's not just a one-to-one replacement. We're expanding the number of cameras in use and increasing our commitment to local news coverage," Folsom said.

"We're delighted that Raycom Media chose the GY-HM650 to expand and replace their existing fleet of ENG cameras," said Lawrence Librach, vice president of broadcast & public sector, JVC Professional Products. "We look forward to working with them closely as they implement JVC's FTP and live video transfer capabilities into their workflow."

Designed for mobile news and reality documentary production, the lightweight GY-HM650 features three, 12-bit CMOS sensors and a built-in Fujinon wide angle 23x zoom lens with auto-focus, optical image stabilizer, and manual controls. When equipped with a Verizon 4G LTE modem connected to the back of the camera via USB, the camera's unique dual codec technology allows shooters to stream live HD video transmissions while continuing to record footage. The camera is also able to transfer recorded clips to a remote server via built in FTP. The GY-HM650 records HD or SD footage in multiple file formats - including native XDCAM EX™ (.MP4), Final Cut Pro™ (.MOV), .MXF, and AVCHD - to non-proprietary SDHC or SDXC media cards. JVC will demonstrate the GY-HM650's live transmission capabilities at the 2013 NAB Show (Booth C4314), which runs April 8-11 in Las Vegas, Nev.

US case reveals perils of pensions

(PRBuzz.com) April 3, 2013 -- A recent case in the United States has highlighted the importance of ensuring that you keep all your financial arrangements up to date, particularly in regard to inheritance, to ensure that your heirs are the beneficiaries of your estate.

When the father of two brothers, 22 and 24 years old, divorced their mother in 2003, they were named the beneficiaries of his pension plan. He remarried in 2009 but two years later, without warning, he passed away

Despite the father's wish that the brothers would be the heirs of his pension, his second wife inadvertently became the beneficiary because she had not signed the necessary documents making the sons the beneficiaries of the pension plan that was valued at $2.2 million.

When tracing missing beneficiaries heir hunters often come across such cases. The deceased may have wanted a particular person to be the beneficiary of their estate but due to poor administration of financial arrangements their heirs become disinherited.

The brothers appointed a new financial advisor to help them secure their rightful inheritance. He commented that "Most people don't make mistakes on purpose; they just don't know better." It is too often the case that an asset is inherited by the wrong person because the deceased never changed the documentation to name those they wanted to benefit as their heirs.

In the US leaving pension assets to someone other than the account owner's husband or wife requires the spouse to approve the arrangement with a signature. Though the father had a prenuptial agreement in place with his second wife and an estate plan, his intention to make his sons the heirs of his pension plan slipped through the cracks.

The stepmother was surprised to learn that her late husband's sons were intended to be the beneficiaries of the pension funds but wasn't willing to simply turn the money over to them. However both she and the brothers wanted to work out a fair and amicable settlement, and avoid wasting more of their inheritance on legal fees.

In the US heirs typically have until Dec. 31 the year following the original owner's death to turn that pension plan into an inherited retirement account but the brothers had missed the window, so fees and taxes would deplete whatever they inherited from that account by 60%.

The new financial advisor resolved to salvage the situation and provide the sons with at least some of the assets their father had intended they would inherit, even if it meant paying heavy taxes and penalties on the money. "Ultimately, the question came down to whether we could get the second wife to sign off on the pension plan, which she can do post-mortem," he said.

Eventually the financial advisor found an option for a trade. He convinced the sons to sell a rental property valued at $300,000, which the father had left to them and give the widow $150,000 of their proceedings. The adviser also suggested his clients let their stepmother keep their father's money-purchase plan, which was part of the pension and valued at an additional $300,000.

Once the stepmother signed the pension over to the sons, she would inherit about $450,000 in assets and the sons would each inherit about $440,000 from the retirement account. As everyone was inheriting roughly the same amount, the stepmother agreed to the plan and signed the pension over to the intended heirs.

Although they had to give up some other funds from their inheritance, the brothers still came out ahead by inheriting at least a portion of their father's pension assets, as he had intended. But the beneficiary mistake cost the sons the full value of the account--and the benefit of future tax-deferred growth on those investments.

Everyone in this case lost out on the full value of their inheritance. Heir hunters would always advise you to make sure your inheritance planning is up to date, double-check the beneficiaries on any type of insurance product or retirement accounts and make sure that your estate goes to those who you intend to be your heirs.

CORINTHIA HOTELS SECOND JUST A DROP CLEAN WATER PROJECT IN TANZANIA

London, England (PRBuzz.com) April 3, 2013 -- Alfred Pisani, Founder and Group Chairman of Corinthia Hotels, and Corporate Patron of international water aid charity Just a Drop, has committed to a second Corinthia Hotels sponsored clean water project in Tanzania, this time in the Kingazi Village outside of Dar es Salaam.

This is the second of a three year commitment that Mr Pisani, a nominee this year for Hotels magazine's coveted 'Hotelier of the Year' award, has made to the UK based water charity.

The second Corinthia clean water project, following the success of the first one inaugurated in the village of Tabata Bima in July 2012, will benefit a village to the west of Dar es Salaam. It is for the construction of a borehole, three storage tanks and a pump house, as well as a water supply system. 640 pupils and teachers of Kingazi primary school and 12,200 members of the Kingazi community will benefit from this project.

Women and children in Kingazi are currently walking distances of up to six kilometers to reach water, and even then often the water they find and use is unsafe. Some women and girls in the area can spend a whole day collecting just two buckets of water which obviously leaves them little time for an education.

Added to this are the health problems caused by drinking dirty, unsafe water. This has the biggest impact on children who are more likely to contract water-borne diseases such as cholera and dysentery. Paying for medicine to resolve these health issues also puts a significant burden on what are already very poor families.

Fiona Jeffery OBE, Founder and Chairman, Just a Drop, said "We are very appreciative of the support given by both Mr Pisani and Corinthia Hotels. Their support in 2011/12 allowed Just a Drop to deliver a project in the Tabata Bima community in Tanzania, helping over 11,000 people. This second project will bring clean water to over 12,000 people in Kingazi, and will again save and change lives, especially for the children of the community."
