Attorney John Bogart Announces Legal Cost Cutting Advice

Bogart coaches his Salt Lake City commercial litigation clients that litigation is like a business -- and that clients should cut costs correspondingly. "All clients should think this way about litigation -- it's a business process," comments Bogart. "I advise potential clients that they should only bring lawsuits when there is a reasonable likelihood of gain for their business; they limit their losses that way. "What issues do they perceive that require a lawyer? What do they hope to get from the process? I'm always up front about costs, and tell them why we're doing -- and not doing -- certain things. My initial approach is how do I win this case, and then backtrack from there so that my client in Utah and those around the nation are not paying unnecessary fees for research and discovery that ultimately don't mean anything to the case. I only want what's essential; not what's window-dressing. I approach every stage of the case with this focus,  tied to commercial litigation."

During these discussions Bogart can also often get his clients to articulate emotional issues that may be driving their quest for commercial litigation. Most of the time there's an emotional factor involved; people get angry and want fairness. That's understandable. "But I want my law clients to understand that civil litigation is a bad place to seek justice; it's too slow and expensive," advises Bogart.
"The more concrete the reasonable goal, the easier it is to achieve," continues Bogart. "If the client's goal is to wreak havoc on the defendant, to tie them up in litigation, drive them into the ground through litigation costs -- I discourage them from taking any action. But if they have a genuine, legitimate goal, then starts the exploration of an appropriate approach and a practical, valuable outcome in the legal process. By narrowing commercial litigation to an achievable goal, the sooner the case can become organized."

When Bogart has a new case, he reviews the initial information and tries to determine how the summary judgment motion would be crafted. "I ask myself what I would need to win the case long before it gets to trial," asks Bogart. "And then I pretty much know how to proceed.

"It's much like a game theory approach," smiles Bogart. "How do you structure the play that affords your team something of value?"

Cancer Support Community of MA South Shore receives $20K grant from Colon Cancer Coalition

NORWELL, MA, (PRBuzz.com) May 31, 2013 -- The Cancer Support Community-MA South Shore is the recent recipient of a $20,000 grant from the Colon Cancer Coalition.

The Cancer Support Community-MA South Shore will use the funds to help create public awareness around colon cancer and encourage the public to get screened. The awareness raising campaign also helps educate those diagnosed with cancer about the Cancer Support-MA South Shore's ongoing support groups, stress reduction activities and educational offerings.
"We are grateful to receive this substantial grant, one that will assist us in our efforts to provide support for and educate those who have been impacted by cancer," said Megan Bettencourt, Executive Director of the CSC MA South Shore. 
"We love the work that Cancer Support Community is doing in the Boston-area and are excited to be able to help them expand the support they provide to colorectal cancer patients. Our donation will allow patients and caregiver to receive services to help them cope with their disease the funding will also expand the process of getting more people screened," said Massachusetts Volunteer Event Director Brian Shelly.
The grant comes as a result of the Coalition's Get Your Rear in Gear 5K Run/Walk, held October 13, 2012 in Boston.  The Get Your Rear in Gear events focus on raising awareness about colon cancer in communities across the country.  They are events designed to unite people, cities and states throughout the USA; to provide support and hope for those who have had their lives affected by our nation's second leading cause of cancer deaths; and to encourage individuals of all ages to get screened. The organization is set to launch its first sustainable and profitable social enterprise, a teen consignment store, this fall with a number of other projects and community initiatives to follow. 

SEA Change Nation's LEARN-LAUNCH-SHARE program is open to all youth; however, the organization's main social mission is to help solve youth homelessness and poverty in Calgary. Research led by The United Way of Calgary indicates 11,000 possible vulnerable youth desire employment, but do not have access to it. SEA Change Nation is directly addressing this by providing a holistic model of support, paid employment and education within a profitable social enterprise. 

Commenting about being chosen for the inaugural Call for Concepts for Social Finance co-founder Tammy Maloney said, "Being recognized alongside the 14 other social change organizations is such an honor. We're pleased to see that the Government of Canada recognizes that both youth and social entrepreneurship have an important role to play in addressing Canada's long term prosperity." 

Speaking further about their organization co-founder Jennifer Benoit said, "In order to create prosperity for all Canadians, we need today's generation of youth to discover their passions and strengths and pour them into businesses aiming to make the world a better place. This is why we created SEA Change Nation."
