    Eight out of 10 workers with disabilities prefer the option to telecommute to other sought-after perks; paid time off tops list

    CHICAGO ( May 7, 2013 -- Workers with disabilities say telecommuting is a key workplace benefit, with eight out of 10 (81.1%) saying they would like the option to telecommute at least part time, according to a national survey released by Think Beyond the Label, a private-public collaborative that helps businesses and the public workforce system connect to job seekers with disabilities.

    Telecommuting was the second-ranked workplace benefit (39.3%) in the national survey released today, surpassing flexible spending programs, which help pay for costs such as healthcare and commuting (14.2%), onsite fitness centers and services (2.0%) and free or subsidized meals (0.8%) as the most wanted employee perk, just behind paid time off (42.5%), such as for maternity leave. 

    More than a perk
    Less than one-third (28.7%) of respondents say their employer currently offers telecommuting, though more than half (67.1%) say they would work for a company even if it did not offer telecommuting at least part time. Still, telecommuting can be more than a perk for some people with disabilities. Of respondents who say they telecommute:

    - More than one-third (37.1%) telecommute because their employer lets them
    - One in five (20%) telecommute because their office is located far away from where they live
    - 17.1% telecommute to accommodate a disability
    - 4.3% telecommute because of inadequate public or private transportation options

    "People with disabilities, like anyone else, look for jobs that offer strong workplace benefits such as telecommuting," says Barbara Otto, CEO of Health & Disability Advocates, the Chicago-based policy and advocacy organization that operates Think Beyond the Label. "This survey underscores the need for more employers to offer telecommuting as a way to cast a wider net for talent and open up more full-time employment opportunities to all workers, regardless of a disability."

    Otto cites Fortune's 100 Best Companies to Work For in 2013, where eight of the top 10 companies offer telecommuting options, and DiversityInc's Top 10 Companies for People with Disabilities, where flexible work options are a criterion for the award.

    Productivity enhancement
    Most workers with disabilities (73.5%) say they believe telecommuting makes them more efficient in their jobs, and the majority (70.6%) says they do not require accessible or assistive technologies to perform their jobs remotely. For those who do require technologies (29.4%), the majority of the solutions cost less than $500:

    • Nearly half (48.6%) use a keyboard or mouse solution
    • Four out of 10 (40%) use accessible tablets and smart phones
    • About one-third (34.3%) use communications tools such as dictation software or speech-to-text programs
    • Nearly one in four (24.3%) use adjustable-height desks
    • About one in five (21.4%) use a screen reader

    ( May 7, 2013 -- Nabal was rich, and he owned plenty of stock as in 'live stock.' There's no indication in Scripture on how he became so wealthy. But it did not matter. Often a person's success no matter how it was achieved creates a n impression of know-how, wise decision making, solid leadership and extraordinary vision. The reality is, an individual's leadership position may have nothing to do with accomplishments or ability according to Dr. Steven DavidSon.

    "Leaders like Nabal, Ahab who listened to dark consulting by his wife Jezebel, and Haman who was a 'corporate' climber even if it meant destroying anyone who was in his way represent a few different types of leaders who can make employees miserable. The question is, what do you do?"

    According to DavidSon, no matter what the position is as a manager or employee, set the ground rules.

    "The fact is every job is not a fit. Beyond the ability to do the work, the greatest factor in my view are the relationship factors. If an employee allows disrespectful conduct from a leader in the beginning it cannot be corrected later. It is necessary to ask as many questions dealing with likes and dislikes as possible before accepting a position. As an example some managers are screamers. If you don't like screaming and personal attacks, you need to be clear in the beginning. So, here's a good question, 'what is your management style? What is your approach when you are under pressure?'The most objective answer I have ever heard was,' I could give you my answer, but you are free to ask some of my employees.'"
    The point is to address issues as early as possible or when they occur. Always have the perspective, with all due respect, everyone has to be treated with respect and dignity, but only bow to Jesus."

    DavidSon shares what should be the focus since everyone has likes and dislikes. It is necessary only to discuss deal breaking issues.

    "Sure, it is impossible to address every kind of issue that can happen in the workforce daily. Address those things that you know to be deal breakers with you that the majority of persons in the workforce will find objectionable. Then, there are some activities that are prohibited by law. These fall under Civil Rights Law, and Fair Labor Relation Standards. When these occur, there are a number of legal alternatives."

    DavidSon also calls for any manager or employee to be perceptive and to personally demonstrate the virtues sought in others. Thereafter, they may need to take third-party action.

    " If a manager or leader criticizes your co-manager, or co- worker, recognize he/she will do the same to you. It's fair-game to say,' I understand your frustration. Why don't you share your concerns with him/ her. Let me know anyway I can help.'

    When you have done all that is possible, remember, Nabal's employees knew he was a fool. They observed him daily and followed his guidance. But when his foolishness jeopardized their lives, they had to respond by reporting to another authority, his wife, Abagail. She did not doubt their report. She also knew her husband was a fool. She took action. Here's a reality. When someone is a poor leader those in leadership realize the problem. Poor leaders are costly in every way."

    DavidSon provides what is ultimately most important.

    "Once you have taken the personal face-to-face measures, perform as well as possible under duress, and begin each day with prayer about your circumstances. Ironically, rarely is there a report of a clergy member addicted to heroin, but clergy members fall to sexual misconduct daily it seems. While women make themselves available, it is more apparent that the clergy member is initiating the proposition. This is anecdotally what I know to be accurate, and the Baylor University study on Clergy Sexual Misconduct affirms this conclusion."

    According to DavidSon, if the minister succumbs, it is a trap with few escapes.

    "Absolutely! It is usually way too late before there's any appeal for help. Typically, the ministry is crashed and lives are seriously damaged. However, there are circumstances were the misconduct is assimilated and a seriously flawed church-work continues. It happens, but it is rare to see a truly recovered condition. "

    DavidSon discusses a key factor in his book on Christ- based Sexuality.

    "No doubt a temptation is like being grabbed by the collar and invited to indulge in a gratifying experience. However, temptation is like a storm or high emotion, it will pass. It is much easier dealing with temptation as opposed to all that is involved with being liberated from sex-sin bondage. It is a trap that only God's direct intervention can break."

    WOODBURY, New York ( May 7, 2013 -- Hitachi Kokusai Electric America announces that TSE (Total Sports Entertainment) Services--a systems integrator based in La Crosse, WI--has installed three new Hitachi Z-HD5000 HDTV studio cameras, a YESCO video board, and a full HD production control room in the Convocation Center on the campus of Eastern Michigan University (EMU) in Ypsilanti, MI.

    Under the project management of A/V Consultant Frank Moraski, Jr, a principal of Anthony James Partners (AJP) in Richmond, VA, the facility renovation involved LED displays from YESCO (Young Electronic Sign Company), in Logan, Utah, which in turn contracted TSE Services for the turnkey systems integration work.

    Bob Johnston, regional sales manager, Hitachi Kokusai Electric America, facilitated the camera order, including three Hitachi Z-HD5000 HDTV studio cameras with CU-HD500 camera control units and FUJINON HD lenses, as well as a Hitachi RU-1000VR control panel for remote camera setup. Two Z-HD5000's are in a studio configuration on tripods, while one is used as a shoulder-mount handheld within EMU's Convocation Center - an 8,000-seat arena where the University's NCAA Division I basketball, volleyball, wrestling, and gymnastics events are held.

    "For live event entertainment, EMU has invested in broadcast-quality, HD cameras, and the picture quality is outstanding," said Marty Masewicz, an A/V systems integrator with TSE Services, which specializes in the design and installation of big-board displays and A/V installations for sports, education, and other applications nationwide. "As the public becomes more media-savvy, picture quality is a key consideration, especially when the image will be displayed on a huge video screen."

    Another important consideration favoring the selection of Hitachi cameras was user-friendliness, since EMU students often operate the video equipment in the Convocation Center.

    According to Masewicz, the HD control room was designed to serve the production needs of other athletic facilities on the EMU campus, including Rynearson Stadium, the 30,200-seat football stadium next door to the Convocation Center. "The Hitachi Z-HD5000's fiber camera adapters enable long-fiber runs within the arena--and eventually from other campus venues--back to the 'production room.'" In this room, TSE installed a Broadcast Pix Granite 2000 integrated HD production switcher and a NewTek 825 8-channel replay system, as well as ClickFX Crossfire and Blaze systems to feed the big-board.

    At present, the Hitachi cameras will capture HD video of games and special events like graduations for display on a four-sided, center-hung YESCO LED display/scoreboard and two 50-foot courtside LED ribbons.

    "In our experience," Masewicz said, "colleges and universities have increasingly been adopting high-quality HD video displays to provide live entertainment during athletic and special events. The Hitachi Z-HD5000 is an affordable, high-performance solution, ideal for this application."
